Every family has a collection of family stories woven in and out through the generations. These stories can be a combination of impactful tidbits that give clues to a family to what life was like 50-100 years ago. At the base of each story, there are words that represent the core foundational values of each family.
Humor, loyalty, passion, adventure, respect, compassion, can all blend together to create the foundation that represents a family. When each member is bogged down in the day to day happenings of a hectic family life, those words can be replaced with fear, worries, anxiety, depression, and judgement.
It takes a conscious awareness to stay rooted in knowing what family values are the true core of the family to remember the heart of who each person is, even when they’re getting on your last nerve. I’ve found that seeing family can instantly make one resort back to their 12 year old self because all of the same triggers can arise when you are around the people that have known you since you were first born.
Three words that we celebrate in every family unit are adventure, humor, and kindness. It’s important to recognize that a family unit does not necessarily have to be a Mom, Dad, and two kids. A family can be one person and their two dogs. Alternatively, a family can be two people that are soul mates but choose not to have children.
Adventure - One of the main reasons that so many people have hesitations around “settling down” and starting a family is that it does not fit in with the idea of a nomadic, adventurous lifestyle. Family dynamics of structure, obligations, appointments, etc all stand in the way of a life full of adventure. Choose to surround yourself in your chosen family with people that uplift you by encouraging adventure anywhere that you are. It makes life more fun!
“Spend your life with people who make even going to the grocery store an adventure.” - Cleo Wade
Humor - The best type of families have a bucket full of inside jokes. You know a story will be a good one when you can look across the table and start out with, “Remember that time when…” A family that can break the ice of any family disagreement with a moment of levity is one that consistently knows how to have a good time, no matter what.
“Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment.” - Grenville Kleiser
Kindness - At the heart of it, the most important word that represents what every family should seek to center their family around is kindness. It goes a long way, more than anything else will because without kindness, you can’t sustain the difficult moments.
“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” - Unknown
By restructuring the way that one looks at family, we can recognize that family can become the people close to us that we choose to spend time with. It is an even more impactful relationship if you choose to spend quality time with other humans, not because you have to but because they’re, “Your people.”
